Every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment to grow, thrive, and dream boldly. But for thousands of children in our communities, that fundamental right has been stripped away due to abuse and neglect. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month—a time to raise awareness, amplify voices, and take meaningful action to protect and support the most vulnerable among us.
At The Friends of Foster Care (TFFC), we believe that healing from trauma starts with love, stability, and opportunity. We walk alongside children who have experienced abuse by providing the resources, relationships, and enrichment they need not just to survive—but to flourish.
The Reality Behind the Statistics
Child abuse and neglect are among the leading causes of trauma in youth entering foster care. These children carry the invisible scars of betrayal, fear, and instability. In Virginia alone, thousands of children are removed from their homes each year due to unsafe conditions. And while foster care offers safety, the system is not a cure—it is the beginning of a long journey toward healing.
That’s where TFFC comes in.
Our Response: Love in Action
We exist to stand in the gap between what the system provides and what children truly need to heal and succeed. TFFC surrounds youth in foster care with a community of consistent support, providing:
-
Educational Support to help children catch up, stay on track, and reach their academic potential.
-
Extracurricular Enrichment like sports, arts, and camps that allow kids to just be kids, rediscover joy, and build confidence.
-
Holiday and Birthday Gifts that remind children they are remembered, celebrated, and worthy of love.
Our mission is simple: to create normalcy, nurture dreams, and restore hope.
Real Impact, Real Stories
Through the dedication of our team and the generosity of our supporters, TFFC has served thousands of children across Virginia—helping them rise above their pasts and build resilient, joyful futures. Every tutoring session, every camp scholarship, every carefully wrapped birthday gift tells a child, “You matter. You are not alone. You are loved.”
Join Us in the Fight Against Child Abuse
This month—and every month—we invite you to stand with us. Whether it’s becoming a mentor, volunteering your time, making a donation, or simply spreading the word, your involvement helps change the trajectory of a child’s life.
Together, we can prevent abuse, support healing, and create a future where every child feels safe, cherished, and free to dream.
