In honor of National Foster Care Month, this May, join Heroes in Motion, a powerful step challenge where every step makes a difference. Participants across the country will walk 368,000 steps during the month of May. One step for every child in foster care in the United States. Whether you’re walking around your neighborhood or tracking miles on the treadmill, you’re stepping up for children who deserve stability, opportunity, and hope.
For our local Hampton Roads heroes, the journey doesn’t end there. We’ll come together on May 30th at the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished; featuring a fun, family-friendly event with laps, community partners, and well-earned recognition for our participants. Let’s move together, show up boldly, and celebrate the power of every single step.
May is National Foster Care Month & we’re making every step count.
ABOUT THE CHALLENGE
Walking for the kids who need us most.
Heroes in Motion is a month-long walking challenge hosted by Friends of Foster Care in honor of National Foster Care Month. Every step you take raises vital funds that power our programs, from mentorship to resources for foster youth.
You don’t need to be fast. You don’t need to be a runner. You just need to show up, one step at a time, for children who deserve a hero in their corner.
HOW IT WORKS:
Simple steps. Real impact.
The challenge runs the entire month of May. Here’s how to get involved:
At the end of May, submit your step total. Pledges are collected and your impact is locked in forever.
Funds raised support Friends of Foster Care’s programs for foster youth.

GOT QUESTIONS?
We've got answers.
Do I have to walk exactly 368,000 steps?
Not at all! We encourage you to do your best. Every step still raises money and every dollar still matters. This is about effort and heart — not perfection.
What step tracker should I use?
Any tracker works: Phone, watch, strava, ring, or even a manual log. Use what you already have!
How do sponsors pledge?
You’ll get a personal fundraising page to share with your network. Sponsors can pledge a flat amount or an amount per step. Funds are collected at the end of May once you submit your total.
Where do the funds go?
Funds raised support Friends of Foster Care’s programs for foster youth in our community during National Foster Care Month and beyond.
What if my audience or team isn’t local?
No problem! Heroes in Motion is open to everyone, everywhere. You can walk wherever you are and raise funds from anywhere in the world.
When does the challenge start and end?
The challenge runs May 1–31, 2026. Sign up before May 1st so you’re ready to go from day one!
