Dr. Mitchell is Medical Director of CHKD Medical Group and specializes in pediatrics and infectious diseases. He also leads the International Adoption and Travel Medicine Clinic. As an adoptive father, he’s deeply invested in the well-being of foster and adopted children.
What Douglas says inspired him to join the TFFC board:
“I adopted my daughter 35 years ago. Probably due to that personal experience, I have been providing medical care and consultation for international adoptions since 2005. In 2015, we partnered with Departments of Social Services to improve our quality of care and processes for the medical care of children in foster care. We have been educating local pediatric offices to reduce barriers to care and standardize care. CHKD Norfolk Pediatrics has been the Foster Care center of excellence for the past 3 years. Our entire clinic is committed to providing coordinated, high quality care and eliminating the barriers for foster parents and DSS.
TFFC is a crucial partnership to provide the support necessary for these vulnerable children with complex needs.
I continue to be impressed with how caseworkers deal with the sometimes impossible tasks handed to them, and the compassion and commitment provided by foster parents to help these children.“
