TFFC First Star Pathways Program

The TFFC First Star Pathways Program is a year-round leadership, academic, and life-skills initiative designed to support high school students in foster care ages 14–18 as they prepare for college, careers, and independent adulthood.

Through a unique partnership with the national nonprofit First Star, The Friends of Foster Care (TFFC) delivers a comprehensive program that combines academic support, leadership development, and real-world career exploration. This collaboration allows youth in our region to participate in a model that has helped thousands of foster youth across the country graduate high school and pursue higher education.

The Pathways Program follows a four-year cohort model, meaning scholars can remain in the program from 9th through 12th grade, receiving consistent mentorship, academic guidance, and community support during some of the most critical years of their lives.

Our goal is simple: ensure that youth in foster care have the resources, confidence, and opportunities to succeed after high school.

Our Connection to First Star

TFFC is proud to be part of the national First Star network, which provides long-term educational programming for high school youth in foster care.

For more than two decades, First Star has worked with universities and community organizations across the United States to ensure that foster youth have access to higher education pathways, leadership development, and supportive peer communities.

By partnering with First Star, TFFC brings this nationally recognized model to our local community while expanding it with additional tutoring, career coaching, and year-round programming tailored to the needs of youth in our region.

Pathways Program — Summer 2026

Summer Academy: Dorm Days

A multi-week immersive college-campus experience — giving scholars a real taste of university life, independence, and what’s possible after high school.

Each summer, Pathways scholars participate in Dorm Days — living on a university campus, attending workshops, exploring careers, and building the confidence and independence they need to thrive in college and beyond. This year’s program spans two transformative experiences: a Virginia campus stay at Virginia Wesleyan University, followed by an out-of-state college immersion in New York City at Hofstra University.

From time management to self-advocacy, scholars develop the independence and confidence to navigate adulthood.

Summer 2026 — Two-Phase Program

This Summer’s Experiences

Scholars begin at home in Virginia, then travel to New York — a progression designed to build confidence, independence, and a broader sense of what’s possible.

Phase 1  ·  Virginia
Virginia Wesleyan University
July 19 – July 31, 2026
Norfolk / Virginia Beach, VA

Scholars kick off Dorm Days with nearly two weeks living on the Virginia Wesleyan University campus — establishing routines, building relationships, and developing the academic and personal skills that form the foundation for college success. Program staff and mentors guide scholars through a structured, supportive environment that mirrors what college life will look and feel like.

College Readiness
Workshops and academic sessions preparing scholars for postsecondary success
Academic Enrichment
Tutoring and skill-building support integrated into daily campus life
Life Skills & Leadership
Independence, time management, and self-advocacy in a real campus setting
Career Exploration
Guest speakers and sessions introducing scholars to diverse career pathways
Team-Building & Recreation
Group activities that build friendships and a strong sense of community
Mentorship
Consistent guidance from program staff and guest mentors throughout the stay
This phase helps scholars develop the routines, expectations, and mindset of a college student — in an environment designed to support and challenge them in equal measure.

Phase 2  ·  New York
Hofstra University & New York City
July 31 – August 6, 2026
Hempstead, NY & New York City

Building on the foundation established at Virginia Wesleyan, scholars travel to New York for an out-of-state college immersion unlike anything most have experienced before. Based at Hofstra University, scholars venture into New York City to visit colleges, explore new industries and cultural environments, and practice independence through supervised travel — expanding their sense of what the world holds for them.

University Housing
Living in Hofstra University residence halls in Hempstead, NY
NYC College Visits
Tours of colleges and universities in the New York City area
Cultural Exploration
Exposure to New York’s arts, culture, and diverse communities
Career & Industry Exposure
Connecting scholars to industries and opportunities found only in a major city
Independent Travel
Supervised travel experiences that build confidence and real-world navigation skills
New Environments
Broadening perspectives through immersion in one of the world’s most dynamic cities
This experience expands scholars’ understanding of the possibilities available to them after high school — and challenges them to see themselves in spaces and places they may never have imagined.

The bigger picture
Confidence, Independence & Vision
Dorm Days is more than a summer program — it is a turning point. Scholars leave with a clearer sense of who they are, what they are capable of, and where they are headed. They return home having lived on two university campuses, explored a major American city, and built friendships with peers who understand their journey.
